Common questions about blocked drains

General

General questions about Magic Drains

The basics people usually want to know before they book a drain specialist, especially when they want someone local, qualified and easy to deal with.

What makes Magic Drains different from other drain services?

Magic Drains is run by Chad, a local certified plumber and gasfitter. When you call, you deal directly with Chad - not a call centre or a subcontractor.

That owner-operated setup means quicker communication, practical advice in plain English, and a proper focus on solving the actual problem without turning the job into a sales exercise.

How quickly can you get to me?

Most jobs are sorted the same day. If it is urgent, especially when wastewater is backing up or the drain has stopped working, we prioritise it wherever possible.

If the job is less urgent, we will give you the next realistic time available and keep the timing clear. You are not left waiting around for a vague half-day window.

Are you certified?

Yes. Chad is a certified plumber and gasfitter, so you are getting a qualified tradesperson with real drainage experience and the right equipment for the job.

Services

Questions about drain unblocking and inspections

These are the service questions we hear most often from homeowners, landlords and property managers across the wider Wellington region.

What causes a blocked drain?

The cause depends on the drain, but the usual culprits are:

  • Grease and fat build-up in kitchen drains
  • Hair and soap residue in bathroom and shower wastes
  • Tree roots getting into underground pipes
  • Foreign objects and wet wipes in toilets
  • Collapsed, cracked or displaced pipes in older properties

If the cause is not obvious, a CCTV drain inspection is usually the quickest way to confirm what is happening before more work is recommended.

What is high-pressure water jetting and when do I need it?

High-pressure water jetting pushes a powerful stream of water through the line to clear stubborn blockages and clean the pipe wall properly. It is especially useful for grease build-up, root matter, sludge and repeat blockages that keep coming back.

It is often the right option when a basic clear is not enough, or when you want a better long-term result from the job.

What does a CCTV drain inspection involve?

A small waterproof camera is fed through the drain so we can see exactly what is happening underground without digging anything up first. That helps locate cracks, breaks, root intrusion, poor fall, displaced joints or the reason a blocked drain keeps returning.

CCTV drain inspections are especially helpful for recurring drainage issues, pre-purchase checks, insurance documentation and any job where you want proper answers before deciding on repairs.

Can you fix the drain once you have found the problem?

Yes. Magic Drains handles drain repairs and maintenance as well as drain unblocking, CCTV work and high-pressure water jetting. If the pipe is cracked, root-damaged or otherwise failing, we can talk you through the sensible next step.

If a job falls outside the right scope for Magic Drains, that will be explained clearly and early, so you are not pushed into the wrong solution.

Pricing

Questions about drain pricing and callouts

Pricing questions matter because most people just want to know what the likely cost is, whether the callout is included, and how after-hours work is handled.

How much does drain unblocking cost?

Standard drain unblocking with high-pressure water jetting starts from $270 + GST for the first hour, Monday to Friday during business hours.

You can see the full rates on our Pricing page. If you would rather talk it through first, call 021 086 44669 and Chad can usually give you a practical indication of cost before arrival.

Are there hidden fees or separate call-out charges?

No. The first-hour rate covers the callout and the initial work, and you are told what is happening before extra work or extra time is added.

If a job runs longer than expected, additional time is billed in clear increments and flagged with you first - not quietly added to the invoice afterwards.

Do you charge more for after-hours callouts?

Yes. After-hours rates apply outside Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm, and on public holidays. Those rates are listed on the Pricing page.

If you are unsure whether the job is urgent enough to sort immediately, call and you will get an honest steer on whether it is best handled now or during standard hours.

Can I get a quote before you come out?

Absolutely. Call 021 086 44669 for a free, no-obligation chat. Based on what you describe, Chad can usually give you a realistic guide on pricing and whether CCTV, jetting or repairs are likely to be needed.
